These meatballs with Okra, popular among Iraqi Jews, have a slightly sweet and sour flavor. They make a nice entree or even as an accompaniment to a vegetable main dish.

Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef
2 med. onions
1/2 c. finely chopped parsley leaves. Substitute celery leaves if desired.
1/2 tsp. turmeric
2 tbl oil
1 med. tomato
1/2 can tomato paste
1 tbl sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 pkg. frozen Okra (defrost and rinse well)
Salt and pepper to taste
About 3 cups water
Directions
- Put ground beef into a bowl and add 1 finely grated onion.
- Add chopped parsley (or celery) leaves, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, salt and pepper.
- Add a little water to hold the mixture together, mix well with hands then form into small balls.
- Chop the remaining onion finely and sauté with oil until golden brown.
- Add meatballs and gently sauté on medium-high heat until lightly browned, and then remove from oil.
- Chop tomato and add to onion and oil. Sauté lightly.
- Add tomato paste, okra and stir in with sugar, salt, pepper and remaining turmeric. Continue sautéing, stirring frequently.
- Add 2 1/2 cups water and lemon juice, and bring to boil.
- Add meatballs and lower heat to medium-low.
- Cover and cook for 1/2 hr. stirring occasionally.
- Adjust seasoning to taste and serve over white rice.
